Fasting has been part of we human from long time ago. Fasting is done for many religious reasons. But in past few years, knowing the health benefits, fitness industry has adopted it as well. In fitness terms, this fasting is known as, “Intermittent Fasting”.

What is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting is the way of organizing your 24 hours of day in fasting and eating periods. While you fast, you don’t eat anything. You can either drink very less fluid or no fluid at all. If you think it as a diet plan, then there is huge possibility that you are wrong. Intermittent fasting doesn’t tell you what to eat, it tells you when to eat. It is more of a lifestyle change than a diet plan.

Methods of Intermittent Fasting

This particular fasting can be done in several different methods. Few of the popular methods are as follows:

  • Eat-Stop-Eat:
    In this method, you do fasting once or twice a week. Choose your day and don’t eat anything for 24 hours. You eat normally rest of the week.
  • 5:2 method:
    You eat for 5 days normally in this method. Only on 2 days, you are in fasting stage with calories 500-600 only.
  • 16/8:
    Here you divide your 24 hours in 16 and 8 hours. You fast for 16 hours and eat for 8 hours only. This is popular method among all. You get to decide your 8 hours of eating as per your routine.
  • 16/8 with bulletproof coffee:
    In this method, the fasting is done with a bulletproof coffee in the morning. It keeps hunger away for many hours, giving you energy to go through whole day of dieting.

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

There are many health benefits of this kind of fasting. Through fasting, you are actually helping your body in many ways. We can trace the results back from the history. People used to eat a single meal and work throughout the day. Eating was for survival, not for appetite. There was no 3 course meal, though they were healthy and strong. Some of the health benefits of Intermittent fasting are:

  • Promotes weight loss
  • Body opts for stored fat for energy
  • Promotes cellular repair
  • Ensures longevity
  • Reduces bad cholesterol
  • Anti-aging property was found on rats due to fasting
  • Decrease insulin resistance

Conclusion

Though it feels exciting, it surely is not for everyone out there. People with medical issues are suggested not to go on any such fasting. If you are underweight, you may be losing your gains by this fasting. So, before you decide to go on intermittent fasting, check on your medical issues. Else, if is very good technique to keep your body fueled and lose some extra fat as well.
